Air Ambulance and Air Medical Services

An air ambulance is an aircraft used for medical assistance when a traditional ambulance cannot be of service. All air medical crews are supplied with equipment that enables them to help patients who are critically injured or ill. Common equipment for air ambulances includes ventilators, medication, an ECG and monitoring unit, CPR equipment, and stretchers. An air ambulance is used very often in cases transplant. Air medical teams can either use an air ambulance to send over an organ, or transport a patient to a new hospital.

The military was the first to use the air ambulance and air medical teams. The use of the air ambulance dates back to World War I. The first civilian air medical team was put together in 1928, which marks the year the air ambulance was first used as a form of medical transportation. The air ambulance is good for gaining access to remote areas, and requires a skilled air medical team. Most of the remote areas visited by the air medical teams do not have the necessary equipment, so the air medical teams need to be sure the air ambulance is filled with the proper equipment. Air medical teams may encounter problems or complications if they do not come fully prepared for any situation.
